It was reported this week that “Steel Magnolia” is the latest film getting the remake treatment. It was announced that Lifetime will be producing an all-black version of the 1989 classic that starred a young Julia Roberts.
As reported by Deadline.com, director Kenny Leon has signed on to direct the movie.
I must admit, I am a little over all the remakes. But this is one that really caught my attention. I loved the original film. And I think that Lifetime has really stepped up its game in the movie department. I am very interested in seeing how the made for TV version of Steel Magnolias will be cast. So in the spirit of southern hospitality, I have decided to help the folks at Lifetime out by giving them some of my suggestions. So I hope you’re listening Lifetime.M’Lynn Eatenton : Sally Field’s unforgettable portrayal of M’Lynn, the heart of the group will be hard to top. The actress who gets the role needs to possess the matriarchal strength to anchor that cast, but also a flair of southern charm. I’m sure that many will automatically go to Angela Basset for the role, but I believe that Lynn Whitfied is the way to go. In my opinion, the Louisiana native is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood. I believe this role could be a great opportunity for Whitfield to play opposite the snobby socialite that she does so well.
Shelby Eatenton Latcherie: Julia Roberts, in one of her early movie roles, stole our hearts as Shelby. Roberts was even nominated for her first Oscar for her portrayal. So needless to say, the actress who wins this role has some pretty big shoes to fill. I know that Jurnee Smollet would be amazing as Shelby. She embodies the tough as nails spirit of Shelby but also the endearing vulnerability that made us
fall in love with the character.
Truvy Jones: The always over the top Dolly Parton played Truvy, the owner of the hair salon that serves as a gathering place for the women. My first and only choice is Loretta Devine. No explanation necessary.
Annelle Dupuy Desoto: Casting the role of Annelle was the most difficult for me. Darryl Hannah shined as the plain Jane who blossomed during her journey. The actress who takes on the role has to be a chameleon. So after much thought, I think that Joy Bryant is my Annelle.
Ouiser Boudreaux: I think Viola Davis would be stellar as the caustic, seemingly bitter, but lovabale and endearing widow Ouiser. The role was originated by the incomparable Shirley MacLaine. I would love to see Davis deliver some of the hilarious one liners courtesy of Ouiser. In addition to playing the role to perfection, I also think Davis would make an excellent foil for the actress I think should play Clairee.
Clairee Belcher: Phylicia Rashad is my first choice, hands down. Like Olympia Dukakis who originated the role in the film, Rashard has a vibrant personality that shines on camera. She also has worked with director Kenny Leon before, when he directed her in the television adaptation of A Raisin In The Sun.
Below is the trailer from the original 1989 movie. Check it out:
Reel sista and superstar singer Jill Scott is now a mommy. On April 20, 2009, Jill and her fiancee, drummer Lil John Roberts, became the parents of a baby boy according to People Magazine.
Jett Hamilton Roberts was born at 4:20 p.m. and weighed 7 lbs., 8 oz.
Jill is currently working on the HBO series “No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” based on the popular novels by Alexander McCall Smith.
Also, rumors are flying that reel sista and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is expecting her first child. Jennifer is engaged to David Ortunga aka Punk from ‘I Love NY.’ Neither Hudson, nor her reps have confirmed. Reel Sistas will keep you posted!
After years of consistently giving standout performances, Angela Bassett has been recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The entire Bassett-Vance clan was on hand for the ceremony, including the little ones, Zac and Bronwyn.
Reel sista Angela Basset has been cast in “Notorious” the biopic about the life of slain rapper Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. Angela will play Voletta Wallace, the mother of Biggie. The cast also includes Jamaal Woolard as Biggie, Derek Luke and Puffy, and Anthony Mackie as the late TupacShakur. The film is set to be released in early 2009
Beyonce Knowles’ campaign for world domination is expanding. The rising film star is already at the top of her game in worlds of music and fashion. And now she is flexing her talented muscle behind the camera as well.
It was announced this week in Variety that Beyonce will executive produce and star in the Screen Gems thriller “Obsessed.” She will play the wife of my favorite reel brother, the oh so sexy Idris Elba.
In the film Elba plays an office manager who is stalked by a temp in his office (played by Ali Larter).
Beyonce was last seen in “Dreamgirls” and has also been cast as Etta James in the upcoming film “Cadillac Records.” After “The Fighting Temptation’s” and her other films “Obsessed’ will mark on of the first films where Beyonce will play a character who is not a singer. I look forward to seeing Beyonce spread her acting wings and making a distinction betweenher music and her acting. the film is set to go into production this summer.

In The News
Late next month, Vivica A Fox will be seen in the film “Cover” directed by Bill Duke. This film will show that impact that a down low relationship has on two Philadelphia families. Thanks for sticking with me and for anyone new welcome.
Big news for all my Trekkies. According to the Hollywood Reporter, reel sista Zoe Saldana is close to sealing the deal and signing on to join the 11th installment of the hughly popular Star Trek franchise.
The producers are keeping a lid on the details, but sources say that Zoe will play the role of Lt. Uhura, the chief communications officer on the USS Enterprise.
This is the role that was first played to perfection by Nichelle Nichols on the original television series as well as in several of the films. Nichols is credited with playing the first non-stereotypical (meaning ‘mammy’) black woman on television.
As for Zoe, she first hit the big screen opposite Britney Spears in the film ‘Crosswords,’ which was penned by reel sista Shonda Rhimes (creator of Grey’s Anatomy). Recently, Zoe was seen in the film ‘Premium.’ Up next, she can be seen in the films ‘Blackout’ and ‘Vantage Point,’ both slated for release later this year.
Hello all! Its been a minute since I’ve posted, but I am back to the grind of school and work. Anywho, Check out these pics from ‘The Perfect Holiday’ (formally ‘The Perfect Christmas’). The film is produced by and stars reel sista Queen Latifah.
The film also stars my favorite reel sista Gabrielle Union, who was last seen in Tyler Perry’s ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ and the ever-so-sexy Morris Chesnutt. This marks the latest Gabrielle/Morris collaboration. The two have also co-starred in ‘The Brothers,’ ‘Two Can Play That Game,’ and ‘Breakin All the Rules.’
Two of my favorite former TV sistas Jill Marie Jones (formerly of ‘Girlfriends…i still miss Toni Childs) and Rachel True (from Half & Half) play Gabrielle’s friends in the movie.
Here’s the synopsis from blackfilm.com :
THE PERFECT HOLIDAY is a heart-warming holiday story of Nancy (played by Gabrielle Union – “Daddy’s Little Girl” & “Bring it On”), a loving single mother of three who falls for Benjamin (Morris Chestnut – “Best Man”, “Like Mike” & “Breakin’ All the Rules”), a talented but struggling songwriter who is working part-time as a mall Santa. Conflicts arise when her oldest son, 10 year old John-John, convinces his younger brother and sister to join him in mischievous plots and schemes against their mother’s new boyfriend in the hopes that she will reunite with his hero – their rap-mogul father J-Jizzy (Charlie Murphy). Being narrated by Queen Latifah in a magical role of “Mother Christmas” opposite Terrence Howard, who plays a hard-to-dislike Scrooge-ish character named “Bah-Humbug”, THE PERFECT HOLIDAYsuccessfully brings together all the elements that will make this a Holiday Classic
I for one can not WAIT for this movie to come out. ‘THe Perfect Holiday’ is set to hit theatres on December 14, 2007.
